Objective
This haiku poem is a composition of non-literal visuals and interpretive typographic sequences. This composition showcases the haiku principles of simplicity and intensity through visual elements.
Poem:
Mood-board
A traditional Japanese haiku centered around spring was my direction. Visually representing cherry blossoms was very important, which are an integral part of Japan's spring season.
Ideation
Each spread represented one line in the poem. A circular component connects each image, as this poem is about spring, or the circling of the year back into life. Bright colors were imperative as they are reflective of the colors in Japanese Ukiyo-e prints.
Iteration
Final
The final composition shows the author's name, Matsuo Basho. "Spring" was emphasized in the first spread, as well as a full moon for the circular element. The blue to a lighter, more saturated color. For the middle spreads, I emphasized the word "dawn" and made the sunrise the circular element. The third spread emphasizes the words "cherry blossoms" and the circular element I created was water rippling as the petals fall. The back cover has the full poem in Japanese, which is seen in the backgrounds of the spreads.
